Minerals

Zanzibar is actively exploring its mineral resources to diversify its economy beyond tourism and cloves. Recent geological surveys have identified deposits of various minerals, including high-quality limestone, ideal for cement production, along with silica sands, strontium-bearing materials, and heavy mineral sands.

While still in an exploratory phase, the mineral sector in Zanzibar offers significant value for Zanzibar’s economic diversification. Limestone reserves reduce the reliance on imported cement and support local construction industries. Meanwhile, silica and strontium-rich sands open avenues for glass, ceramic, and electronics applications. The government is in the process of establishing regulatory frameworks, expanding laboratory capacities, and implementing airborne geophysical surveys to extend coverage and accuracy across the island. These developments position Zanzibar for eco conscious industrial growth that aligns with broader national mineral development trends.
